Finding Your Personal Style

What is style to you? Style can mean many different things to many people. It isn’t just about the way you dress. Style is the way you show up every day. Developing your sense of style can take time. It’s what you want to be known and remembered for. Your personal style is part of your trademark, your personal brand.

To explore and find your style, you need to do some reflection on identifying your sense of self and how you want to show up for the world. I suggest that you find somewhere comfortable, grab a nice notebook and make yourself a nice cup of tea.

Style Reflection

Who do I want to be?

Who inspires you? Why do they inspire you? What is it about their style, their personality traits and how they show up that inspires you? We are amazing beings that have the ability to keep reinventing ourselves. List some qualities that inspire you.

Now think about yourself. How can you start to embody those qualities? How can you start to incorporate that sort of style into your life and wardrobe?

Create a mood board

Mood boards are almost like vision boards, but for your clothes. I love creating mood boards on Pinterest, as they really help visualise the type of style you would like to emulate. It can also be very helpful to get inspiration on how to style certain clothes or accessories.

Understand your lifestyle

Lifestyle is so important, because you want to be investing in clothes that are fit for purpose. We are so bombarded by social media, influencers and marketeers who are constantly trying to get us to buy certain trends and must have items. It might be great to have the latest straw handbag, but if we spend most of our time at our corporate job and our leisure time in active wear, we might find that we don’t have much use for the trend item. Sad but true. Write down what a typical week looks like for you, and the types of events you may have time to time. This will help you develop a style and wardrobe that really works for you.

Words

Write down your favourite words that describe what you would love your style to be. This can be anything from fierce to feminine. Have a bit of word splurge and see what comes to mind. You might be surprised as to what types of words you gravitate towards.

Now that you have completed your reflection exercise, you should have a better understanding of your personal style and what it means to you. The next step is taking a good hard look at your wardrobe to see if what you currently have actually reflects who you want to be.
